Science at Loddon Primary School
Intent
At Loddon, our curriculum aims/intends to:
- Enable pupils to develop scientific knowledge, understand concepts and acquire skills, and be able to choose and apply these in relevant situations.
- Promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of our pupils in relation to scientific theories and evidence preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
- Ensure equal access to learning for all pupils, with high expectations for every pupil and appropriate levels of challenge and support.
- To enable children to know how to best conduct themselves when they need to consider issues that might affect their lives and the lives of others.
- Promote a positive attitude towards collaborative learning and independent discovery though scientific experimentation and discussion.
- To enable children to work scientifically by building upon their skills throughout the school.
- Equip pupils with the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life, and to engage and understand the world around them.
- Enable pupils to feel confident to make links between the knowledge they are acquiring and the use of subject specific skills to develop their understanding in science.
Implementation
In order for our aims to be met we do the following:
- Science is taught across the school from Early Years to Year 6.
- In Early Years, the children develop their scientific skills and understanding through continuous provision and planned enhancements.
- In Years 1-6, Science is taught as a distinct subject, whilst still creating scientific links within other subjects through high quality texts.
