Design and Technology (DT)

Our DT curriculum aims/intends to:

  • Ensure pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems.
  • Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • Build and apply a broad repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
  • Enable pupils to draw on other disciplines such as maths, science, computing and art.
  • Offer opportunities to take risks and experiment with ideas.
  • Ask children to critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products, and the work of others as well as think about impact on daily life.
  • Help children to understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
  • Support pupils to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making.

DT is taught from Early Years to Year 6. Teachers are encouraged to give the children flexibility to develop and explore their own ideas leading to an end product. Pupils are also be taught how to use a range of tools safely. DT is taught as a stand-alone lesson, but is also seen across other subjects.
